As if that weren’t confusing enough, it will also engage with the comic book concept of a “multiverse” (previously explored in “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse,” an animated film featuring Jake Johnson, Shameik Moore and Nicolas Cage) and introduce the contemporary Spider-Man (played by Tom Holland) to characters from the earlier, previously unrelated films “Spider-Man” (2002, starring Tobey Maguire) and “Spider-Man 2” (2004, also starring Tobey Maguire) as well as “The Amazing Spider-Man” (2012, starring Andrew Garfield), “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (2014, also starring Andrew Garfield). Despite being the twelfth movie about Spider-Man, it’s actually only the sixth to take place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and the third within its own mini-trilogy (following “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming”).
